I can think of a few times in my life when I have seen a distinct “turning of the page” into a new chapter of my life. What about you? What are these events? Make a list or a simple timeline. It’s incredibly eye-opening. God is sovereign over each turning page.
We transition from 1st to 2nd Samuel, and the first 5 chapters tell of the transition of the throne from Saul to David. Scan over these chapters by reading the headings. They are beautiful to read if you have some time before settling into bed or by the pool.
Was this transition easy for David?
Did he immediately receive what God had promised?
Did he ultimately receive it?
You may not be able to tell from reading just the headings, but it took over 7 years after the death of Saul until David completely took the throne over all of God’s people. And it wasn't easy or pretty. It was 25 years after David received the calling that day in the dust of the sheep fields. I think I would have given up in discouragement long before this day.
The lessons for me are clear...
First, God is in control. I am not. I must be patient and wait on the Lord in humble obedience and faith.
Second, just because something is hard doesn’t mean it’s not God’s will and plan. For some reason we think that if everything isn’t smooth and perfect, we’re not in line with God’s design. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Hope. Persistence. Obedience. Trust. These are not easy, but they are necessary in our life as we walk with the Lord day by day.
Tomorrow we’ll begin with the first recorded Psalm from this season of David’s life. Here’s a teaser from Psalm 68:19...
”Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation.”
Chapter by chapter. Page by page. Day by day.
