Bathsheba Lesson 4 - Numb

I’m sick of the dentist!  In the past couple of months, our family has dealt with a crown, 3 cavities, regular cleanings, braces, and now wisdom teeth. I think I need to add a new line item to our monthly budget just for our teeth!  Honestly though, I shouldn’t complain.  I’m grateful for the opportunity to get great care when we need it... and for dental insurance!

But why am I even bringing up the dentist?  Because the worst part of all of it for me is the numbness that comes with all of this work.  Hours upon hours of feeling disconnected from my own body is terrible!  Yet, I don’t seem to have the same repulsion to being numb in my soul.

Numb to sin.

Numb to the Lord’s commands.

Numb to wise counsel and Biblical teaching.

Numb to the Spirit’s leading.

Why is that?  It’s scary to find yourself here.  Sometimes you don’t even know how it happened. One thing’s for sure though, it doesn’t happen overnight.  Becoming numb to the Lord is a process of taking small steps leading away from Him and toward the place you never intended to go.  Watch how this works for David and Bathsheba. Read 2 Samuel 11:16-27.

1. Did David’s cover-up plan work?

2.  How did David respond to the news?

3.  What was Bathsheba’s response to the news?  What do you think was her greatest concern as events unfolded?

4.  And what did David do to “comfort” Bathsheba and hide their original sin?

Things had gone so far that David seemed to have little conviction over what he had just done. He was numb to his sin and thought it was all good since his plan had “worked.”

5.  Reread verse 27.  What was the Lord’s response to David’s behavior?

CONNECT:  Just as David’s string of sin led to him a place where he seemed to be willing to do anything without conviction, we can easily find ourselves in the same place.

Have you ever experienced this sort of reality in your own life?  What was the first step?  Where did the path take you?

What causes you to become numb to sin?

To be honest, the more I am “in the world,” the more I don’t seem to think that the world is that bad.  When I fill my ears with the world’s music, watch shows that I know are unholy, frequent places that are dark, or fellowship closely with those who don’t know or love Jesus - I become more like the world.  I become numb to what is right and wrong.  This is the “gray” that the world applauds in order to justify any and every behavior they please to pursue.

Girls, it is essential that you and I seek God’s heart daily and fill our lives with people, places, and things that point us back to Him.  “Following your heart” leads us far from Him and straight to hell, and indifference to sin is the smooth highway that takes us there.  We need God to prick our hearts regularly with His holiness!

Oh Lord, let us live keenly aware of your truth!  Make us sensitive to what displeases you so that we may walk closely with you for all of our days and bring you glory.  Wake us up from our numbness with your holiness and mercy... keep us close to you.

“They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned in Christ - assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

-Ephesians 4:18-24
