Take Cover

“The tornado sirens are going off,” repeated my Brian as he woke me at 2:15 this morning. We began our usual routine of walking outside and staring into the sky (duh!  I know this is exactly what we’re NOT supposed to do!) and watching the lagging radar on our phones.

For the first time ever, he came back and said we should get the boys and take cover. “Do what?!” I thought. “It’s never this close to us.” But it was.

We all piled into my closet with pillows and the dog {who was ready to party🤪} and waited. This closet is our safe room full of layers of clothing and sound walls. Minutes went by and the fear subsided, so I started snapping pictures of us in the dark... hilarious ones. We looked terrible, but we were together and safe.  More minutes turned into laughter until we realized the worst had passed by, and the sirens had stopped. We made it. Thank you, Lord. And we headed back to our cozy beds.

This morning, our rain gauge reads 3 inches, the trees are completely still, and the sun is shining brightly. We’re tired but good. Thankful. And we’re blessed with a huge gift of the pollen being washed away. Just yesterday it covered EVERYTHING here with a yellow-green tint and literally made you feel sick. Today, it is clean.

As I sip my coffee, I’m overwhelmed with the working of the Lord through the storms in our lives. They will come. Sudden. Scary. Uncertain. And yet they can be full of real peace and joy when we choose to take cover in His presence. He protects us as the storm passes by and even blesses us with unexpected gifts of grace leaving us better than before. Thank you, Lord, our Refuge.

“Yet I will celebrate in the Lord; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!”  Habakkuk 3:18
