Deodorant and Duct Tape

𝓓𝓮𝓸𝓭𝓸𝓻𝓪𝓷𝓽  𝓪𝓷𝓭  𝓭𝓾𝓬𝓽  𝓽𝓪𝓹𝓮.

As my 15 year old packed himself up for a 4 day soccer tournament trip to the valley, I went over the list of essentials. Socks, deodorant, toothpaste, clean underwear,... You know, Mom stuff.

“Yes, Mom. Got it. Got it. GOT IT.”

Seemed he was ready, so I dropped him off at the school and waited for the call of what he had left behind. I even texted to make sure there was nothing last minute. Nope. Got. It.

Inevitably, the call came the next morning as they were loading their bus for their first game.

“Mom. Do you know where my jersey is?”

I had no {good} words.

At this point, nothing I could say would have helped him. Only hurt. It was missing, and all the deodorant in the world couldn’t fix this problem for him. A friend on the team helped him find a jersey and duct tape a pseudo number on it, but as you may expect, he didn’t get to play. We brought his other jersey the next morning, and he got in the game. It was a tough lesson for each of us.

Here’s where my heart connects to God’s truth for my life. I can literally pack everything into my day, including my great intentions, my plans, and my best-but without the truth of God, I am missing the essential for success. I would be trying to play with a duct-taped number on my chest and smelling like deodorant. My clean socks would be going nowhere.

So often, I allow my emotions to sub in for my truth. Yes, my emotions are real, and they seem right as they mask themselves as truth. But they are simply deodorant and duct tape attempts to distract from the fact that the real truth is missing.

How do I make sure that I am ready for the purpose of my calling? I pack my jersey first. I put on my truth before anything else. I grab ahold of it as my identification with who I am as a daughter of the King, and I prepare for the calling before me. Without it, the entire journey is meaningless.

Sister, I don’t know about you, but all the deodorant and duct tape in the world can’t fix the root problem of missing my jersey. My stink breaks through, and my duct tape peels off in the heat. Yep.

It’s time to put on His truth and ready ourselves for today!

Father God, please help us recognize when your truth is missing in our lives.  Reveal when we are relying on our emotions instead.  Help us put on your truth above all else and step into our calling with your wisdom and confidence.  We need you to do this well.  Amen.

Daily Truth:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me-practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” - Philippians 4:8-9

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
